Interview with Kimberly Miranda, San Fernando High School

This interview was conducted by Ronee Connell, Partnerships and Communications Manager, on June 14, 2019.

1) Why did you decide to join DIY Girls?

I already knew that I wanted to get into the engineering field since I was in middle school, so when I found out there was an all-girls engineering program at school, I decided to join in hopes of getting hands-on experience and connecting with mentors.

2) What excites you the most about college?

I am most excited for the independence. I will have the freedom to choose what classes I want to take, get a job, join programs and internships, and learn more about myself. I can't wait to meet new people and have new experiences.

3) What would you like to do after college? What is your dream job?

In college I'd like to study mechanical engineering. But I'm still unsure of what specific job I'd like to do. My dream job would be something that is hands-on and exciting. I also want to do something that helps my community.

4) How has DIY Girls impacted your life?

DIY Girls gave me the tools to build, to feel inspired and motivated, to learn from professionals, and make amazing memories, and I will always be grateful for that.

5) What is your advice to other girls who want to pursue STEM?

My advice would be to just go for it. I was never the top student in my classes. Sometimes it would take me a while to understand certain concepts in science or math, but I still tried and so should you. No matter how hard or discouraging it might get, if it's something you want to do, you must always push through, no matter what.
