At DIY Girls, we inspire and empower girls to envision themselves as the engineers, programmers, and scientists of tomorrow.
Knowing how critical the middle school years can be for teenage girls, our team sat down and discussed ways in which we could engage them on a deeper level. This is how the STEAM Girls initiative in partnership with Girls Athletic Leadership School (GALS) was formed.
We recruited a group of 6th grade girls and over the last year they have created several hands-on projects, including LED light up plushies, interactive friendship bracelets, paper rockets, and animated short films.
After such an exciting year with the girls, and knowing that we would be working with them over the course of three years, we asked ourselves, "How can we enhance their experience?"
We believe in the transformative power of UCLA’s UniCamp and decided this was the type of unique experience we wanted to provide for our girls.
While at camp, the girls will strengthen their bond, gain leadership skills, and collaborate as a team in an environment outside of their day-to-day experiences.
UniCamp will also serve as an opportunity for many of our STEAM Girls to experience a week-long, sleepaway summer camp for the first time.
A majority of our students have never truly experienced the great outdoors. While at UniCamp, our girls will participate in traditional camp activities such as archery, hiking, and building campfires.
